Quick Race Overview For Busy Athletes


Too busy to read our incredibly comprehensive web site or watch the 13-minute logistics video? Here is a quick summary of the things you really need to know about the Auburn Triathlon.

Sat May 19: Registration 2pm-6pm at Railhead Park T2/Finish line in Auburn. Race course meeting at 3pm. If you miss checkin, you can get your chip race morning at Folsom Lake.

Sun May 20 : Race Day

  • 7:00am: Sprint Tri waves start
  • 7:15am: World's Toughest Half waves start
  • 7:15am: Duathlon mass start

LOGISTICS

Folsom Lake swim venue and Railhead Park finish line are 7-miles apart!

1. Place running shoes and other T2 gear at Railhead Park, either Saturday or early Sunday morning.

2. Get to Folsom Lake, 7-miles downhill from Railhead Park finish line. Recommended to park at finish line as directed and coast down for a great warmup, get dropped off at barricade .7-mile from swim venue, or park at lake (no exit till final swimmer ~7:45am).

Driving Directions link gets you to and from everywhere. Don't use Mapquest or the like because you may be misled to parks without specific addresses.

Race Day Parking/Transition/Spectator Logistics - print out and bring with you to Auburn!

COURSE INFO

Swim: Calm water protected by steep canyon walls. Expected temp range is 64-73. Wetsuits are mandatory. Mandatory 10-minute warm to ensure nervous system acclimation.

Bike: Tough climb from mile 0-6, then steady elevation gain as you head east into the Sierra. 36k turnaround at 1,660' elevation, then lose elevation back to Railhead Park finish line at 1,300'.

56-mile route gains elevation to mile 28 at top of course 2,450'. 5.8-mile Bear River loop features a fast, technical descent of 1.6 miles to river, and then tough climb out of same length. At mile 32, return home with steady elevation loss back to Auburn.

At mile 43, you turn back east for a 5-mile out&back portion along freeway frontage road, then return to finish line. Overall, three very steep climbs: mile 3 (one mile); mile 30 (1.6-mile); mile 50 (.4 mile). The rest is gentle grades with very minimal sustained flat sections. Road bike with aerobars is best for safety and comfort.

Run: 7k Run course is Auburn State Park, completely closed to auto traffic. WT Half participants complete three loops of identical course. Sprint course one loop.

BIKE AID:

56-mile bike course has four aid stations, at identical locations outbound and homebound. No aid for Sprint cyclists. Aid stations offer ice cold water and ice cold Cytomax in real bike water bottles from Specialized! Hammer Gel will also be available. Potty at mile 21&37 aid station, and permanent bathroom at Bear River campground mile 30.

  • Bowman Rd: Mile 13 outbound, Mile 50 homebound
  • W Paoli Ln: Mile 21 outbound, Mile 37 homebound

RUN AID: Four aid stations per loop at mile 0, 1.25, 2 & 3. Ice cold water and Cytomax. Hammer gel and assorted sweet and salty snacks. Potty at mile 0, 1.6, and 3.6 on each loop.
