Railhead Park Camping

RV's and camping are very popular at the Auburn Triathlon. We welcome you to camp at the race venue for free. Arrive early to stake out the best spot. We will have an entire soft grass soccer field for tents. RV and car campers can use the nearby Auburn Overlook parking as in year's past. Note: Fast Friday's Speedway Motorcycle races take place at the Auburn Fairgrounds (Friday nights only), causing significant noise until ~10:30pm. The Union Pacific Railroad tracks also pass right by Railhead Park, so a loud night train or two can also be expected. Besides that (: >), you are in a very quiet spot along the rim of the canyon.

Hot showers are available at the Auburn Recreation District park main gymnasium, a short walk or drive away from Railhead. Details follow.

Real Camping - Beals Point State Park: The closest real campground is the excellent Beals Point State Park on Folsom Lake, 13 miles South of Auburn on Auburn-Folsom Rd, about 9 miles beyond the turnoff to Rattlesnake Bar Park T1. The campground is on the shores of Folsom Lake and offers all the amenities - running water, showers, RV spaces, pets allowed, etc. Nightly fees range from $12-16. Please call 916-791-1531 for details and reservations.

Directions from Auburn Railhead Park: Exit park and turn Right onto Pacific Ave. Proceed .1 mile to the Auburn-Folsom Rd signal. Turn left and proceed for ~12 miles to Beals Point State Park entrance (signal light). Turn left into park entrance and proceed to visitors booth.

**

Hot showers are available during limited hours at the Auburn Recreation District city park, about .6-mile from Railhead Park. Map below. Park is on the opposite side of the busy Auburn-Folsom Rd from Railhead. ARD Park has hot showers (the push button kind, but a generous time before you have to hit again) and a large dressing area/locker room.

Driving Directions to ARD Park:

Right out Railhead parking lot onto Pacific Ave. Proceed ~100 meters to the stop sign at Sacramento St. Right on Sacramento St. downhill for ~.3 mile until the road dumps into the busy Auburn-Folsom Rd. The 7-11 store is just off to the right of this intersection. Right onto Auburn-Folsom Rd and then quickly get over to the left lane.

Left at the Racetrack St signal light. Proceed uphill for ~.2 mile to the Recreation Dr stop sign. Turn Left on Recreation Dr and then Left into the main parking lot. Proceed up the main steps to the main park office in the big gym building. Once entering the foyer, you veer left up the steps and into the basketball gym. The bathroom/shower complex is across the other side of the gym.

You can take a great shortcut by walking there. Follow the train tracks behind Railhead Park, across Sacramento St, through the tunnel and then follow the gravel access road to the rear of the Park. Continue till the road is paved, passing baseball field, and eventually reach the main building.

You may also access the bathroom/shower complex from the outside by walking around the gym to the rear of the building and entering the rear doors, which are across from the entrance to the swimming pool. Call 530-885-4581 for lap swimming hours if interested. These doors may be locked during after business hours.
