Folsom Lake T1 Logistics

Here are logistical suggestions for the two-transition (Rattlesnake Bar Park at Folsom Lake and Auburn Overlook) triathlon event.

Registration

You will be given two bags at registration - one for your wetsuit and T1 gear and one for your running shoes and T2 gear. Please label them with race number for easy identification. Also label your wetsuit with name and phone number!

Race Day

Note: If you didn't register Saturday, late check in is at Rattlesnake Bar Park (swim venue) from 5:45-7:15am. If you are coming directly to the lake, realize that you will need your shoes at the Overlook for the run!

    1. Set your bike-to-run transition area at Auburn Overlook Park. You can also set your transition area the day before and leave your shoes in your T2 bag, protected from the elements at your chosen spot.
    2. Get to Rattlesnake Bar, Folsom Lake via Auburn-Folsom Rd. This is an easy 7-mile bike ride from the Overlook almost entirely descent. A great warmup for your body on race morning. There is a Starbucks en route at Auburn-Folsom at the Sacramento St/Herdal Dr signal lite on your right. Parking is restricted at the lake, so please park in Auburn and bicycle down.
    3. Have a great race! All of your gear from the swim venue will be transported to the Overlook and waiting for you at T2.

Driving Directions

Directions to Rattlesnake Bar from Overlook Finish Line:

Note: this is the direct route to the lake, not the same as bike route. The bike route is a few miles longer). From Overlook, turn Left out driveway onto Pacific Ave, proceed 1/2 mile to Auburn-Folsom Rd signal light and turn Left. Proceed through Sacramento St, Maidu Dr and Indian Hill signal lights, then descend steeply for ~1.5 miles to Scotty's Corner (Dal Pino Pools building and boat repair yard on on Auburn-Folsom Rd here and feed store barn is across the street where you turn).

Turn Left at this weird three-way road junction onto Shirland Tract Rd and Rattlesnake Rd. After your turn, immediately proceed on the Right fork onto Rattlesnake Rd and descend gently another 1.6 miles to the traffic island, where you stay left. Proceed another 1.0 miles to the Rattlesnake Bar State Park entrance Kiosk. After .2 mile, turn Left at T intersection to remain on paved road towards boat launch parking lot. Procees .5 miles to T1 in boat launch parking lot.

Directions to Rattlesnake Bar from Auburn-area motels:

Take Interstate-80 to Hwy 49 exit in downtown Auburn. Turn Right onto Hwy 49, proceed under the 80 to the first light at Lincoln Way. Turn Right on Lincoln Way and then, 1/4 mile later, Left on Auburn-Folsom, the first light. You will be right in front of the historic Auburn Courthouse when you turn left on Auburn-Folsom. This is the same as if you are heading to the Overlook. Pass Pacific Ave signal light (the way to Overlook) and continue on Auburn-Folsom Rd past Sacramento St, Maidu Dr and Indian Hill signal lights, then descend steeply for ~1.5 miles to Scotty's Corner (Dal Pino Pools building and feed store barn are here).

Directions to Rattlesnake Bar from the West (Sacrmento, etc.)

Take Interstate-80 to the Newcastle Rd/Indian Hill Rd exit (4 miles before (west) of downtown Auburn exits). Take a hard Right at the signal light immediately off the exit ramp, passing in front of the Exxon Station and then Denny's Restaurant above. Proceed along windy Newcastle Rd for a few miles, continue straight across the busy Auburn-Folsom Rd and continue along rural Newcastle Rd.

Soon you will reach an island where Rattlesnake Rd forks into Newcastle Rd. Proceed straight as you merge onto Rattlesnake Rd (no more Newcastle Rd). Continue for 1.0 mile to Rattlesnake Bar Park entrance Kiosk. Proceed through Kiosk into Rattlesnake Bar State Park. After .2 mile, turn Left at T intersection to remain on paved road towards boat launch parking lot. Procees .5 miles to T1 in boat launch parking lot.

Note: Spectator parking is limited inside park and cars may not exit on park roads until final cyclist has left park. You can park before Kiosk along Rattlesnake Rd and hoof it the final .7 miles to Transition Area.

Directions to Auburn Area Overlook:

From the West (Bay Area, Sacramento): Take Interstate-80 to the Newcastle exit (4 miles before (west) of downtown Auburn exits). Proceed straight through signal light at exit, between gas stations and up Indian Hill Rd. Continue for 3 miles on Indian Hill until it ends at the signal light at Auburn-Folsom Rd. Turn Left on Auburn-Folsom road and proceed ~1-mile to Pacific Ave (the first signal you will hit). Turn Right on Pacific Ave and proceed ~.5 mile to the Auburn Area Overlook. There is plenty of parking along Pacific Ave as well as inside the Overlook parking lot.

From the East (Reno): Take Interstate-80 to Hwy 49 exit in downtown Auburn. Proceed for ~1 mile to Sacramento Street and veer Left onto Sacramento St. You will see a 7-11 market at this veer turn as Auburn- Folsom slopes uphill. Go 1/2 mile on Sacramento St to the first stop sign, Pacific Ave. Turn Left on Pacific Ave and proceed ~.5 mile to Auburn Area Overlook. There is plenty of parking along Pacific Ave as well as inside the Overlook parking lot.

  In Memory: Kristy Gough

Kristy was the 2006 World's Toughest Half champion and Hawaii Ironman world age group champion in 2004. She was killed, along with her training partner Matt Peterson, in a cycling accident in the Bay Area on March 9th.

Kristy's longtime boyfriend Clas Bjorling (2x WT Half champ) of Sweden commented: "I've never seen her so enthusiastic as in the last couple of months. She was a really talented athlete, especially on the bike. She was so strong physically and mentally."
