The Damage Control Master Formula Auburn International Duathlon will consist of a 3k run (1.8 miles) - 90k bike (56 miles) - 21k run (13.1 miles). These distances allow you to match efforts and compare splits with the World's Toughest Half triathlon field. We will time the 3k start to coordinate the arrivals of the first pro swimmer and first 3k runner to T1. Then you will complete the identical route of the next two events of the World's Toughest Half. (Thanks all-time duathlon and high school running legend Paul Thomas for the inspiration). Who will break the tape at the finish line - a triathlete or a duathlete? In '07 it was masters legend Gordy Holterman who smoked the duathlon course in 4:32 and broke the tape just ahead of US Olympian and World's Toughest Half champion Victor Plata.
The 26% run/bike distance ratio equals that of the classic Zofingen Duathlon in Switzerland. The severe terrain and long distances of this event make it a great selection event for Team USA at the ITU Long Course World's.
First 3k Run: The initial 3k takes place at Rattlesnake Bar Park, the site of the swim venue. The 3k run will start at 7:15am. The course will proceed along the lake shore on a mix of paved road, dirt road, single track and double track trail. The course is mainly flat with some rolling sections and gentle climb or descent.
Take your time and enjoy a good warmup for the next two events. If the winner of the initial 3k fails to finish in the top-10 overall, he will receive a special award of a white dunce cap and a stack of temporary tatoos that say, "poser". Note: This is a two-transition race - you will need two pairs of shoes!

56-Mile Bike Ride: You will follow the World's Toughest Half route from Rattlesnake Bar to T2 at the Auburn Overlook in Auburn. From Rattlesnake Bar at elev. 466', you will top out at elev. 2,435' by mile 31, then losing elevation for the final 25 miles to reach the Overlook at elev. 1,350'. This is an incredibly scenic and challenging course that will test all aspects of your cycling ability. Total climbing is ~6,000'.

13.1 Mile Run: You will proceed on the World's Toughest Half 13.1 mile run course - a scenic and challenging 50/50 trail&pavement mix in the Auburn State Park and canyon edge neighborhoods. Enjoy the tranquility of a course almost entirely closed to auto traffic (only 1 mi of open roads) and affording stunning canyon views at seemingly every turn. Culminate your athletic effort with an epic finish up the notorious Dam Wall (mile 11.6 to 13.1).
Loop One consists of flat shaded single track and canal trail (mile 0-1.5), .5 of significant climb (1.5-2), .9 of mild elevation change on Skyridge neighborhood roads and Skyridge school fitness trail, 1.9 miles of steep&moderate descent on Maidu Dr and Dam construction road, 1.5 of moderate&some steep climb to finish line.
Loop Two consists of single track/fire road with mild rolling hills or gradual ascent/descent (mile 6.2 to 11), steep trail descent (11 to 11.6), followed by the Dam Wall climb to the finish. About 1.5 miles of the trail can be considered technical, with the rest smooth wide fire road or very old paved road. This spectator-friendly course passes through finish area at mile 6.2.
