Training on the Course

Come out to Auburn for a wonderful day of training on the Auburn International Triathlon race course! Auburn is right off Interstate-80, 30 minutes east of Sacramento. Here are some details to make your training experience ideal.

We will again have an organized training weekend, details TBA in 2009. If you would like to bring a group out to Auburn to train, we can arrange for the following benefits:

Swimming: Guided swim instruction and/or workout time in swimming pool. A noted local Master's coach will give you stroke technique tips and is available for open water session as well. Additional fees paid directly to the coach.

Lodging: We can arrange for a discounted block of rooms for your group.

Dining: We can arrange for a private dining room at a couple of different restaurants

Call 530-888-9911 or email to discuss further.

Swim Course Training

Folsom Lake is open to boats and other watercraft year-round. Training in the lake - or any open water area where boats are present - should be undertaken with caution. Shoot for a substantial group of swimmers and minimal boat traffic (such as midweek) for enjoyable swimming. Water temperature fluctuates dramatically during th year from below 60 in the winter early spring to nearly 80 in the summer. Driving directions to Rattlesnake Bar park. The water is quite cold (~60 degrees) during snowmelt season of early April through early May, then warms rapidly in time for race day (water temp has ranged from 66-71 over the past four years.

The swim will be a diamond-shaped, counter-clockwise course. You can see most of the route and obtain your sense of direction by observing from the Transition Area at the top of the boat ramp. You will begin swimming to your right, heading towards the open lake, round a turn buoy and then head directly across the lake from the start line into the narrow cove to round another turn buoy, then you will head up the narrow channel to round the final turn buoy. On race day, the first and last turn buoys will be obscured from shore.

Bike Course Training

Driving directions to Rattlesnake Bar park. You may want to begin your ride in Auburn to avoid doubling back to Rattlesnake to retrieve your car after completing the course. You can reach Rattlesnake Bar with a nice easy ~6 mile descent from Railhead Park following the driving directions link.
