40K
BIKE
Enjoy
extremely quiet roads and a tough, beautiful
40 Kilometer (24.8 mile) course. This course consists of a challenging
climb from Folsom Lake (el. 466') up to
Auburn (el. 1,300'), The first six miles
are entirely uphill, almost all at a mild
grade, but with one section of steep switchbacks
lasting one mile.
When you reach mile 6
at Maidu Drive in the Auburn neighborhoods,
you will enjoy four miles of minimal elevation change, then a 1.5 mile climb to the top of Auburn. From there, you will follow freeway frontage roads with minimal elevation change to the turnaround at mile 16 at 1,700'. On the return home, you lose 350' in elevation, broken up by the notorious "LeMond Walked" climb of .4 miles at 12% grade at mile 19.
This
is a safe course taking place mostly on
rural roads with minimal traffic and only four
signal lights. Less experienced riders can
feel comfortable that despite the hilly
terrain, there are no dangerous descents
or sketchy cornering presenting a danger.
Please be prepared with proper gearing and
fitness to climb steeply on Shirland Tract
Rd from mile 3.5 to 4.5.

(just 1 mi of open roads) and affording stunning canyon views at seemingly
every turn. This
course is 1/3 single track trail and 2/3
paved road. It is a hilly, challenging
and incredibly scenic; plan on
taking several minutes longer than you would
require to run a flat 10k. This 10k course is the first loop of the 13.1 World's Toughest Half course.
