Registration Details

The second annual Cytomax Auburn International Triathlon will be contested at the International Olympic distance of 1.5k Swim - 40k Bike - 10k Run. The race will be held in conjunction with the sixth annual World's Toughest half-iron distance competition on Sunday morning, May 18th, 2008.

International course athletes will start in their own wave(s) 30 minutes after the first long course wave departs, completing a 1.5k swim course (first buoy for is further away for the 1.2-mile half racers, and will be removed from water before Int'l tri starts). You will then bike the identical initial 16 miles of the World's Toughest Half course, then turnaround and return for the final eight miles to the Auburn Overlook finish line.

You will then depart on the 10k run in the Auburn State Park, featuring scenic, shaded single track trails and paved park roads (100% closed to autos) with a magnificent view of the American River below. The bike and run courses are hilly and challenging so train well and have fun!

40K BIKE

Enjoy extremely quiet roads and a tough, beautiful 40 Kilometer (24.8 mile) course. This course consists of a challenging climb from Folsom Lake (el. 466') up to Auburn (el. 1,300'), The first six miles are entirely uphill, almost all at a mild grade, but with one section of steep switchbacks lasting one mile.

When you reach mile 6 at Maidu Drive in the Auburn neighborhoods, you will enjoy four miles of minimal elevation change, then a 1.5 mile climb to the top of Auburn. From there, you will follow freeway frontage roads with minimal elevation change to the turnaround at mile 16 at 1,700'. On the return home, you lose 350' in elevation, broken up by the notorious "LeMond Walked" climb of .4 miles at 12% grade at mile 19.

This is a safe course taking place mostly on rural roads with minimal traffic and only four signal lights. Less experienced riders can feel comfortable that despite the hilly terrain, there are no dangerous descents or sketchy cornering presenting a danger. Please be prepared with proper gearing and fitness to climb steeply on Shirland Tract Rd from mile 3.5 to 4.5.

Click here for complete bike course details, including descriptions, turn-by-turn with mileage and predicted timelines and an assortment of super cool maps and photos.

10k RUN

The 10 kilometer (6.2-mile) run course is almost entirely closed to auto traffic (just 1 mi of open roads) and affording stunning canyon views at seemingly every turn. The route consists of flat shaded single track and canal trail (mile 0-1.5), .5 of significant climb (1.5-2), .9 of mild elevation change on Skyridge neighborhood roads and Skyridge School fitness trail, 1.9 miles of steep&moderate descent on Maidu Dr and Dam construction road, 1.5 of moderate&some steep climb to finish line.

This course is 1/3 single track trail and 2/3 paved road. It is a hilly, challenging and incredibly scenic; plan on taking several minutes longer than you would require to run a flat 10k. This 10k course is the first loop of the 13.1 World's Toughest Half course.

Click here for complete run course details, including written description, one of the coolest maps of all time and an elevation profile.
