New 10k Run Course Gets Rave Reviews
The Auburn Triathlon run course was changed for the 2008 event and received endless complements from the athletes. The course is scenic, quiet, challenging and has extremely good footing nearly the entire way. Half-iron and long course duathlon racers complete two loops of the 10k course, with a beautiful detour of .7 on the second loop (Scenic Pony Express and water canal trails) to achieve 13.1 miles total.
Aid support is extraordinary, with seven aid stations on the 10k route (14 stations for half-marathon runners). As always, athletes received ice cold sponge hits, ice cold carry water bottles and ice cold Cytomax, which many exclaimed was the key to getting them through the 97-degree race day temperatures.
Past racers will note that run course no longer has the steep descent/climb known as "The Pit", nor the "Dam Wall" climb to the finish. Instead the route hugs the rim of the canyon and ventures into Auburn neighborhoods. The alteration was due to the new State Park river recreation project (auto traffic now on our old course!), deterioration and overgrowth on the Western States Trail and the desire to lessen downhill pounding on your legs.
The new route includes a lap on the Skyridge School fitness trail, a signature project of the Running School kids fitness organization. Every morning, hundreds of Skyridge school students circle the trail as part of their Morning Mile program. The trail was built in summer 2007 with hundreds of hours of volunteer labor and is also used by local residents.

Read more about the incredible success of Running School in the 2007-08 school year. The 4,800 students at our 10 partner schools performed extraordinarily in comparison to the (quite alarming) California average. Through repeated testing, coaching and encouragement, 86% of our students attained the national aerobic performance standard known as the "Healthy Fitness Zone", indicating sufficient fitness to avoid sedentary-related health problems. In contrast, only 60% of California 5th graders passed statewide.
We visit each campus several times
per semester to produce exciting running events that promote the importance of
enjoying a healthy, active lifestyle and developing healthy competitive
attitudes and pursuit of process-oriented goals.
Thank you to the many athletes
who donated $12 on their
active.com on-line entry forms. We appreciate your consideration of a
donation to Running School, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization funded by
