Auburn Triathlon Update

Remembering Kristy Gough
Kristy was the 2006 World's Toughest Half champion and Hawaii Ironman world age group champion in 2004. She was killed, along with her training partner Matt Peterson, in a cycling accident in the Bay Area on March 9th.

Kristy's longtime boyfriend Clas Bjorling (2x WT Half champ) of Sweden commented: "I've never seen her so enthusiastic as in the last couple of months. She was a really talented athlete, especially on the bike. She was so strong physically and mentally."

New 10k Run Course
The Auburn International 10k Course/Loop 1 of World's Toughest Half and Auburn Duathlon has been changed! The course will now avoid the steep descent/climb known as "The Pit" entirely and instead hug the rim of the canyon and venture into Auburn neighborhoods. The alteration was due to the new State Park river recreation project (auto traffic now on our old course!) and the desire to lessen downhill pounding on your legs.

The new route - which saves 250 feet of climbing out of the Pit -  includes a lap on the Skyridge School fitness trail, a signature project of the Running School kids fitness organization. Every morning, hundreds of Skyridge school students circle the trail as part of their Morning Mile program. The trail was built in summer 2007 with hundreds of hours of volunteer labor and is also used by local residents. Jog around this half-mile trail (signs and painted arrows guide the way) when you check in at Skyridge School on Saturday May 17th!

Click Here for a detailed satellite image of the new route! Once again, you will end up at the Overlook after 10 kilometers, with long course athletes proceeding into the canyon for loop 2 on the Western States trail network.

Swim Venue Volunteer Opportunity
Perhaps you can interest your support crew in volunteering at the swim start? It's the only way into the Rattlesnake Bar State Park! Parking is extremely limited at the lake and we are asking athletes to get dropped off or cycle downhill 7 miles from the Auburn Overlook T2/Finish Line to the lake. Volunteers however may park and the lake and drive in their athletes. Duties will include assisting with athlete traffic flow/swim exit/bike exit, serving water, duathlon run course support, T1 gear loading, etc. Volunteers may exit after the last cyclist is off, at approximately 8:30am. Kayak volunteers are especially appreciated. Please email if you with your volunteer's name and we will provide details.
