2007 Racer Comments

I aI am a TriDog from Santa Rosa, in charge of membership
for the club. Along with 15 other TriDogs,  I came to
yesterday's race injured and poorly trained due to my
tendency to squander time. I competed in The Half and
had the time of my life. I will never forget this
experience.

Prior to the race I had reservations about my fitness
and ability to compete. I went to the overlook wanting
to do the race, and seeking inspiration, and in the
midst of all that beauty I decided to do the best I
could, but to race within my capabilities and be fully
satisfied with whatever happened. I am so glad I did.

Everywhere I ran into race staff I was amazed at how
cheerful and helpfull they were. The physical beauty
of the race was breathtaking. The swim was wonderful.
The hills were daunting and yet inviting. The run
along the irrigation creek at the end was inspiring
and the finish line was so welcome.

My injuries make it very painfull to pedal hard and to
run down hill, but I did the best I could. At the end
of the race, my friends were anxious to leave, and I
did not even check on my results. After all, I had
them on my watch. Several Tridogs were on the podium.
I was just happy to be alive and well and finished. Thanks so much for a fantastic day.

Tom Morin, Santa Rosa, CA

Auburn is THE race to attend if you enjoy hills, amazing scenery and grass roots racing at its best! If you want the ultimate challenge, this race should not be missed...it makes Wildflower feel like a walk in the park!

Thanks again!

and 2007 WT Half overall female champion

Best event if ever done, very well organized - and I've done several other half ironmans. It was a pivotal event for me. Spectacular scenery. The course is just beautiful. Volunteers were incredible. Sure, its a challenging course, but people should come out and do it. The bike descent to the Bear River really made my day!

Monica Titzel, Reno, NV

Thanks for putting together a very beautiful and TOUGH race.  It was particularly helpful to have pre-read your web page where you gave strategies to have a successful endurance race.  Every time I felt like my positive energy was slipping, I just looked around at the scenery, and smiled (o.k,grimaced).  The support volunteers were great, especially on the run; friendly, upbeat, empathetic.  When I saw STC at the 6 mile mark, was like a mirage full of angels.

Used this race as training for upcoming IM.  I'm hoping it's easy, comparatively speaking. Thanks again.

My name is Luis Frayre, member of the Pasadena Triathlon Club.  I raced your event last weekend and just wanted to send a brief note to let you know that
it was a great experience.  The race was superb, the support, organization, everything flawless (from my point of view). The venue is incredible. I congratulate you and thank you for putting together such a great event.  I will certainly recommend this to other people and look forward to participating next year.

I completed the 1/2 yesterday. Just wanted to give the guys at the waterstops on the run course cudos for a great job - the cold water sponges helped the body feel better, but their words of encouragement were great for lifting my spirit.

Tough course, tough day. But GREAT prep for IMCDA. I'm so glad I did it.

Cindy Jahans

This is the third time that we've done it and the race just continues to get better.  This was my most challenging year yet but I wouldn't have missed it.   The course is beautiful, the event well organized, and you really have the nicest volunteers around.  A big "thank you" to them for standing around in the sun
all day for us. It was great this year not having to deal with traffic on Rattlesnake Bar and Shirland Tract roads.  Having the race on Sunday seemed to cut down on general automobile traffic and that was really ideal. I hope the city continues to support such a great event. Thanks also for putting so much detail on your web site.  I really appreciate that you take the time to include so much helpful information.

  In Memory: Kristy Gough

Kristy was the 2006 World's Toughest Half champion and Hawaii Ironman world age group champion in 2004. She was killed, along with her training partner Matt Peterson, in a cycling accident in the Bay Area on March 9th.

Kristy's longtime boyfriend Clas Bjorling (2x WT Half champ) of Sweden commented: "I've never seen her so enthusiastic as in the last couple of months. She was a really talented athlete, especially on the bike. She was so strong physically and mentally."
